Detroit Collegiate Prep is a new, public, college preparatory high school in Detroit with the Diplomas Now collaborative. This is a partnership between Communities in Schools Detroit, Michigan Future Schools Inc., John Hopkins University's Talent Development school reform program, City Year Detroit and the Detroit Public Schools. The school will open for the 2011-2012 school year and will offer a college preparatory high school environment geared towards success in college and beyond. The school will be located at the Northwestern High School building at 2200 W Grand Boulevard and will feature classes with an 8-to-1 student-to-staff ratio. A block schedule will allow students to focus on four courses at one time.
"I am just thrilled at the depth and quality of the partnerships these schools have established," said said DPS Emergency Manager Roy S. Roberts. "I've been calling for increased partnerships, from business, from higher ed, from the community, but partnerships that are strategic, that are embraced by the principal, and that are student focused. There can be no better example of this than the participants in these programs, and I applaud them for expanding opportunities for Detroit students."
The schools are funded by the state and Michigan Future Inc., through its Michigan Future Schools program, as part of a $2.8 million plan to open four new high schools in the city. Michigan Future Inc. has set a goal of 85 percent graduation rate for the new schools, but DPS has set an even higher goal - 98 percent for all of its high schools by 2015.
